Flicker: the nerves of your employees are put to the test

Flicker is the human perception of light intensity variation. This perception depends on the amplitude and frequency of the event.

Voltage fluctuations are relatively small (less than 5%) variations in RMS voltage that are caused by variable sources of harmonic currents, which typically include welders (spot or arc) and capacitor banks. The voltage variation created by this configuration is coupled to the residential lighting via the distribution system.

The standards (EN50160, IEEE) define flicker limits (Pst and Plt) to be respected. When they are respected, these limits guarantee that the human eye does not perceive this phenomenon. Beyond a certain threshold (generally from 1.5 times to 4 times the normative threshold, depending on the case), this leads to irritation, even to a nervous breakdown or outright epileptic seizures. It all depends on the working conditions and the level of stress they generate for the person who is subjected to them.

What solutions to guard against the “Flicker”?

The solutions are as diverse as the causes of this phenomenon.

A good approach is to identify the origin of the phenomenon and to quantify it (amplitude and frequency), by analyzing the quality of the voltage wave at the points of use, and to take note of the operating conditions and environmental parameters (current-voltage correlation, type of loads, etc.) before determining the appropriate solution from a list of existing solutions.
