The essential and most reliable measure for the protection of structures against physical damage is considered to be the lightning protection system (LPS). It usually includes an external and an internal lightning protection system, in addition to complementary protection measures:

The external lightning protection system (IEPF ) is designed to

1. a) intercept lightning strikes on the structure (by a capture device)
2. b) to safely discharge the lightning current to earth (via a down conductor);
3. c) disperse the lightning current into the earth (through a network of earth connections).

 

The interior lightning protection system (IIEF) prevents dangerous sparking in the structure by using an equipotential bonding or separation distance (and thus electrical insulation) between the components of the external protection system and other internal conductive elements of the structure.

Complementary measures are essential protective measures against injuries to living beings due to contact and step voltages. They are intended for:

1) to reduce the dangerous currents flowing in the human body by isolating the masses and/or by increasing the surface resistivity of the ground;

2) Reduce the occurrence of dangerous contact voltages and steps by physical restrictions and/or warning signs.

Our technical and site teams have undergone rigorous training in the field of lightning protection and all our technicians involved in this type of work are Level 1 certified according to the Qualifoudre reference system. They have also been trained as rope access technicians and are qualified to work at height.
