Medium voltage compensation batteries are designed for heavy industries where a large part of the equipment is supplied with medium voltage, such as mines, steel mills, cement plants, paper industry, etc.
They are also installed by the electricity distribution boards who use them to reduce losses in their medium voltage distribution network (20kV, 22kV, 30kV) or to regulate the voltage according to the load of its customers, in order to reduce voltage fluctuations.
These capacitor banks are usually custom-built according to the customer’s requirements. They can be delivered as an “open rack”, or are delivered assembled in a metal envelope, factory tested, and ready to use.
Like the Low Voltage batteries, the Medium Voltage batteries can be of Fixed or Automatic type, with 1 or more steps, with nominal voltages ranging from 2.4 kV to 35kV. They can be designed for power factor correction, voltage regulation, harmonic distortion mitigation and resonance prevention.
The available filter types are C-type, high-pass, tuned to frequencies of 135, 189Hz or 215Hz, depending on the customer’s need, single and multi-setting.
The interlocking of the steps is generally controlled by a communicating varmetric relay, which measures the voltages and currents on one phase or on the 3 phases simultaneously. It can however be controlled by a voltage regulator (case of distribution boards in general)
